Gnarbox 2.0 SSD

Work Beyond the Desktop

When Gnarbox approached STEL to create the second version of their portable hard drive, both teams knew it needed to be superior in every way—more storage, less weight, new interface, and even more features to improve the workflow of photographers and videographers.

STEL’s design team collaborated with the actual creators who needed and used the Gnarbox, gathering feedback and ideas to optimize this rugged backup device in a way the industry had never seen before.

Recognizably Rugged

Beyond functionality, aesthetics were highly prioritized in designing this project. Gnarbox not only wanted something that looked technology advanced, rugged, and stylish, but also reflected the internal power of the device.

The World’s Most Durable,
Yet User-Friendly Backup Device

Gnarbox 2.0 has the file organization of a laptop and the storage capacity of a field-ready SSD device.

It’s pocket-sized, with high transfer speeds and automatically organizes files for the users, as well as seamless transfers and integrations with editing software.

It’s IP67-certified dust proof and able to withstand water submersion for up to 30 minutes.

Understanding What’s Missing

The process for designing the Gnarbox 2.0 started with extensive research to understand what creators needed in their toolboxes.

STEL’s team worked in a variety of different fields, including user research, study, component management, and potential solutions to lay out a full design strategy for Gnarbox. Every improvement to the 2.0 would be intentional to bring creators to new heights.

It’s the first device of its kind that can offer superior usability, ruggedness, and dependability in one small package.
